In a highly competitive industry, IT job seekers continually ask how they can stand out from the myriad of other candidates that have the same qualifications, experience, and skills. Here are some tips that can help to separate you from the other job seekers.
1. Do your research!
Take the time to learn as much as you can about the company and the position. Look on social media channels, news resources, and websites about the company. Try to find out what the culture is like, any charitable activities that they contribute to or are involved with. In an interview, the more educated about the company, the more you will leave a lasting impression on the interviewer(s).
2. Have examples ready to show how your experience has prepared you for the job
Hiring professionals in IT are looking for candidates that know the systems or technology that their companies use. They want to know that the person they are hiring has dealt with, and has experience in keeping the IT functions running smoothly.
As a candidate, know that it is expected that you have a proven record for the position. The best thing you can do for yourself is have your experiences and examples, at the ready to discuss how you are the solution for the company’s needs.
3. Follow up persistence!
After the interview, make sure you have the contact information for the person/people you interviewed with. You should leave the interview with a timeline of when you should expect to hear from them about the position. In the parking lot, fill out a thank you card to the interviewers thanking them for their time, mention something that happened in the interview, and drop it in the mail.
Next, be sure to send a follow up email the next day, again thanking them and reminding them of your desire to work for their company. Lastly, respect their timeline but continual, persistent communication with the hiring manager, will help to keep you at the front of their minds, and at the top of their list for who they want to hire!
